Why We Do It

New Port Richey's story starts on the banks of the Pithlachascotee — the "Cotee" River. When the city was incorporated in 1924, investors and celebrities saw the sunny riverfront and pictured something big. Silent screen star Thomas Meighan built a home here. Golf legend Gene Sarazen settled in. The Hacienda Hotel opened its doors in 1927 to welcome visiting movie stars. They called it the "Hollywood of the East," and the name stuck.

That 1920s spirit is still alive on Main Street. The Richey Suncoast Theatre — originally the Meighan Theatre, built in 1925 — still hosts live plays, comedy nights, and classic film screenings. The bubblegum-pink Hacienda Hotel still anchors downtown with its Mediterranean Revival charm. And Sims Park's amphitheater still brings music and festivals to the riverfront, just like it always has.

Every March, Chasco Fiesta takes over with the 3rd largest street parade in Florida, a boat parade, car shows, and live entertainment. Every fourth Friday, the streets close down for the NPR Fourth Friday Block Party — an open-air evening of artisans, food, music, and community.

Every profile you visit, every event you attend, and every deal you grab helps support the small businesses and individuals who make New Port Richey what it is. Here for Chasco Fiesta? A show at the theatre? Dinner along the river? The monthly block party? You're part of what keeps this community going.
