Discover Tarpon Springs

A look at the local businesses, attractions, and character that make Tarpon Springs worth exploring.

Discover Tarpon Springs

Walking down Dodecanese Boulevard feels like stepping into a Mediterranean village. Greek restaurants line the waterfront, bakeries sell fresh baklava, shops carry imported goods from Athens, and the sounds of Greek music mix with the smell of grilled octopus. This isn't a theme. It's a 120-year-old community.

What Sets Tarpon Springs Apart

In 1905, John Cocoris brought Greek sponge diving techniques to Tarpon Springs, recruiting skilled divers from the Dodecanese Islands. By 1940, three-quarters of the city's residents were of Greek heritage. Today, Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek-Americans of any city in the country.

The Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard are still a working waterfront — you can watch sponge diving demonstrations and buy natural sponge products. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral anchors the community, and the annual Epiphany celebration has run for 119+ years.

Where to Start

  • Sponge Docks (Dodecanese Blvd) — The heart of it all. Greek tavernas, bakeries, sponge shops, boat tours.
  • Historic Downtown (Tarpon Avenue) — Brick-paved streets, art galleries, boutiques.
  • Spring Bayou — Scenic waterfront area. Site of the annual Epiphany cross dive.

Seasonal Highlights

  • January 6 (Epiphany): 20,000+ visitors for the cross dive at Spring Bayou. 119 years of tradition.
  • November: Seafood Festival — 37 years running.
  • Winter: Snowbird season. Peak tourism at the Sponge Docks.
  • Summer: Beach visitors at Fred Howard Park. More casual, less cultural tourism.

Getting Around

Sponge Docks area is highly walkable and pedestrian-friendly. Parking available along the waterfront. Tampa International Airport is about 40 minutes south.
