Why We Do It
Tampa's story starts at Fort Brooke in 1824 and runs through the cigar factories of Ybor City that made us the "Cigar Capital of the World." Vicente Martinez-Ybor brought thousands of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants here in 1885, and their influence still shapes our food, culture, and neighborhoods today.
The Gasparilla Pirate Fest has drawn crowds since 1904 — 300,000+ people now watch pirates "invade" Tampa Bay aboard the Jose Gasparilla ship every January. The Bucs brought home Tampa's first home-team Super Bowl victory in 2021. The Lightning won back-to-back Stanley Cups. The 2.6-mile Tampa Riverwalk connects world-class museums, waterfront dining, and Curtis Hixon Park.
