Why We Do It

St. Pete's story starts with a coin flip. In 1892, Russian aristocrat Peter Demens won the right to name this waterfront settlement after his hometown of St. Petersburg, Russia. What began as a small stop on the Orange Belt Railroad has become one of Florida's most creative and welcoming cities.

Today, St. Pete has earned its reputation as the "City of the Arts." The Salvador Dali Museum draws over 400,000 visitors a year. The Museum of Fine Arts holds 5,000 years of art history. The Chihuly Collection, the James Museum, and the Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement round out a museum district that rivals cities many times our size. And every year, the SHINE Mural Festival brings international artists to paint our streets with new public art.

But St. Pete is more than its museums. Beach Drive offers waterfront dining with sunset views over Tampa Bay. Central Avenue runs west through the EDGE District — full of craft breweries, designer shops, and dance clubs — into Grand Central, our original gayborhood, where Pride flags fly year-round. The Saturday Morning Market fills Al Lang Stadium every weekend with local produce, handcrafted goods, and community energy. And each June, St. Pete Pride draws 300,000+ people for Florida's largest celebration.

Every profile you visit, every event you attend, and every deal you grab helps support the independent businesses and individuals who give St. Pete its character. Here for a Rays game at Tropicana Field? Exploring the galleries along Central Avenue? Grabbing brunch on Beach Drive after the Saturday Market? You're part of what keeps this community going.
