Why We Do It
Dunedin's story is one of Scottish heritage, baseball tradition, and coastal charm. Founded by Scottish merchants John O. Douglas and James Somerville in 1885, our city takes its name from the Gaelic word for Edinburgh – "fort on the hill." That founding spirit stuck. More than 135 years later, Dunedin still feels like a small town that knows who it is.
The Highland Games bring thousands every spring to celebrate our Scottish roots. TD Ballpark fills up when the Toronto Blue Jays arrive for spring training, just as they have since 1977. The Pinellas Trail cuts right through downtown, bringing cyclists and walkers past our Main Street shops and trail-side cafes. And you won't find corporate chains crowding out the local businesses – that's by design.
