Why We Do It
Clearwater Beach starts with a simple fact: 2.5 miles of white sand and crystal-clear Gulf waters on a barrier island off Florida's west coast. For most of its history, this stretch of shoreline was unreachable — no bridge, no road, just sand and surf.
That changed in 1915 when the first bridge connected the mainland to the beach. The Memorial Causeway followed in 1927, known as the "Million Dollar Causeway," and visitors started arriving in numbers. Bob Heilman's Beachcomber opened in 1948 and is still serving guests today. When Pier 60 opened in 1962, it gave the beach its gathering point — a 1,080-foot pier stretching into the Gulf where people fish, walk, and watch the sun drop below the horizon.
The Sunsets at Pier 60 celebration, running every evening since 1995, turned that daily event into a tradition. Street performers, local artisans, and musicians show up two hours before sunset and stay two hours after. It happens every single day. The Beach Walk promenade, completed in 2008, connected the beachfront hotels and restaurants with a pedestrian-friendly waterfront path.
Today, TripAdvisor consistently ranks Clearwater Beach the #1 beach in America, and Travel + Leisure named it among the 15 best white-sand beaches in the world. The beach draws families, snowbirds, water sports enthusiasts, and sunset chasers from everywhere.
