Most people who've written off Florida beaches haven't stood on this one.
What Sets Clearwater Beach Apart
Barrier island, not mainland. The water is calmer, warmer, and clearer than what you'll find on most of the Florida coast. You already know the rankings. What they don't tell you is how shallow the Gulf stays. Walk a hundred yards out and the water barely reaches your waist.
But sand and water didn't build this place. Pier 60 did. The 1,080-foot fishing pier opened in 1962 and became the island's center of gravity. When the Sunsets at Pier 60 celebration started in 1995, it gave the beach a daily ritual. Artisans, street performers, musicians gathering every evening as the sun drops into the Gulf. Three decades of that, and it still runs. Every night.
Beach Walk, completed in 2008, connected the beachfront into a walkable promenade. Hotel to dinner to sunset without crossing a parking lot. Bob Heilman's Beachcomber has been open since 1948. Longer than most of the buildings around it have existed.
Where to Start
- Pier 60 area. The heart of the island. Casual restaurants, ice cream, souvenir shops, the nightly sunset celebration. Nobody cares if you're still in your swimsuit
- Beach Walk. Gulf-side promenade lined with resort hotels and upscale beachfront dining. Fresh seafood, tablecloths, sunset views. The dressier side of the island
- The Marina. Intracoastal side. Boat tours, dolphin cruises, deep-sea charters, parasailing. If your beach day involves being on the water rather than beside it, start here
- Mandalay Avenue. Main road through the island. Local shops, boutiques, services. Less glossy than Beach Walk. More useful
When to Come
Winter and spring (Dec-Apr) is peak season. Snowbirds and spring breakers overlap. Best weather, lowest rain chance, highest hotel rates. The island fills up and stays full. Book early or learn the hard way.
Summer (May-Sep) is family season. Water goes bathtub-warm. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in daily but burn off in an hour, leaving skies that photographers wait all year for. Rates drop from the spring peak.
Fall (Sep-Nov) is the one locals won't stop talking about. Water still warm. Beaches emptier. Hotel prices come down. The light turns golden and stays that way for weeks. If you've only seen Clearwater Beach between December and April, you've seen the crowded version.
Getting Around
The Jolley Trolley connects Clearwater Beach to the mainland and points along the coast. Beach Walk handles the beachfront on foot. The Clearwater Ferry runs to downtown Clearwater across the harbor. Parking fills fast and costs more during peak season. Bike rentals and golf carts are the local move.
