Clearwater's Story
In 1912, Pinellas County broke away from Hillsborough and needed a county seat. Clearwater wanted it. So residents built a courthouse overnight. Not a figure of speech. They worked through the night, put up the building, and secured the seat by morning.
That stubbornness never left.
The Philadelphia Phillies started spring training here in 1947. They're still here. BayCare Ballpark hosts their 80th year in 2026, the second-longest player-city relationship in Major League Baseball history. Families who made the trip in the '60s now bring grandchildren.
Downtown went quiet for a stretch. Cleveland Street had empty storefronts and not much reason to stop. That chapter is closed. The pedestrian district has a growing stretch of restaurants, fitness studios, and local shops that would have been unthinkable a decade ago. The $64 million Imagine Clearwater waterfront park opened in 2023 with a 4,000-seat amphitheater and walking trails on the harbor. And the Capitol Theatre, open since 1921, still runs a full calendar from the same stage.
A downtown that lost its footing, then decided to get it back.
