Why We Do It
Clearwater's story starts with clear springs, a harbor, and a railroad. Incorporated in 1891, the city grew from a small Gulf Coast settlement into a destination known worldwide for its white sand beaches and warm water. When residents built the county's first courthouse overnight to secure the county seat in 1912, they set the tone for a community that gets things done.
The Philadelphia Phillies have called Clearwater home for spring training since 1947 -- the second-longest player-city affiliation in Major League Baseball history. Every February and March, BayCare Ballpark fills with fans carrying on a tradition that spans nearly 80 years.
Downtown has come back to life in a big way. The Cleveland Street District has transformed from a quiet stretch into a walkable destination of restaurants, fitness studios, and local shops. The $64 million Imagine Clearwater waterfront park, which opened in 2023, gave the community a 4,000-seat amphitheater and walking trails right on the harbor. And the Capitol Theatre, operating since 1921, continues to bring live performances to the heart of downtown.
Across the causeway, Clearwater Beach draws visitors from around the world. Pier 60's daily sunset celebration has been a tradition since 1995 -- artisans, street performers, and musicians gather every evening to mark the end of the day. And the Clearwater Marine Aquarium's story of Winter the Dolphin put this community on the map for marine conservation.
