Why We Do It
Brooksville's story begins in the 1840s with Fort DeSoto, a frontier outpost that became a regular stop on the Concord stagecoach line across the Florida frontier. The rolling hills that distinguish this region from most of table-flat Florida drew settlers to what would become one of west-central Florida's oldest communities. When the settlements of Pierceville and Melendez merged in 1856, Brooksville was born — and soon became Hernando County's seat of government.
Today, the downtown maintains its historic character with cobblestone streets and Spanish moss-draped oaks surrounding the picturesque courthouse square. As a Florida Main Street community since 2016, Brooksville balances careful preservation of its 1870s and 1880s architecture with modern revitalization efforts. The Lykes family cattle ranching legacy, the frontier spirit of the Fort DeSoto era, and a dedicated preservation community have shaped a downtown that feels authentically Floridian in a way few places still do.
