Brooksville in 60 Seconds
Hills. In Florida. That alone makes this place different.
Fort DeSoto brought settlers in the 1840s. A stagecoach line brought travelers. When two nearby settlements merged in 1856, Brooksville became the Hernando County seat and stayed put. The Lykes family built a cattle ranching legacy that shaped the county for a century.
The downtown you walk today dates to the 1870s and 1880s. Cobblestone touches on the streets. Spanish moss hanging from oaks older than any building on the block. A courthouse square at the center of everything. Brooksville earned Florida Main Street designation in 2016, and the preservation shows. Not because someone rebuilt it to look old. Because they never tore it down.
Every December 31st, a tangerine drops from the water tower at midnight. It sounds made up. It's not. It's the kind of tradition that only happens in a town where people know each other, and where nobody is trying too hard to be something they're not.
