Discover Brooksville

A look at the local businesses, attractions, and character that make Brooksville worth exploring.

Discover Brooksville

The first thing you notice is the hills. In a state that's mostly flat as a pancake, Brooksville sits on rolling terrain that sets it apart from every other Florida downtown. Spanish moss hangs from oak trees around a courthouse square that looks like it hasn't changed since the 1880s.

What Sets Brooksville Apart

This is frontier Florida. Fort DeSoto was established here around 1840, and the town that grew up around it became the Hernando County seat in 1856. The Lykes family built one of Florida's most important cattle ranching operations in the rolling hills outside town. Downtown's 1870s and 1880s architecture has been preserved and revitalized as part of Florida's Main Street program since 2016.

Cobblestone streets, a picturesque courthouse square, and buildings that predate most of Florida's development — Brooksville is the real thing, not a recreation.
